In an online store, almost every lost sale has the same cause: the shopper asked a question and did not get an answer in time. They went to a competitor or simply postponed the purchase. A chatbot closes that gap, because it replies at any hour in the channel where the customer is already writing.
Which questions shoppers ask most often
| Shopper question | What the bot does | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Is this in stock? | Checks stock levels and delivery times | The shopper stops waiting for a call |
| Will this size fit? | Recommends a size from the measurement chart | Fewer returns |
| When will my order arrive? | Answers using the order number | Fewer calls to support |
| Can I return it? | Explains the terms and the return window | No negative experience |
| Is it cheaper above $110? | Checks the promotion terms | The average order value grows |
Which scenarios bring in revenue
- Qualifying the enquiry: city, quantity, timing, repeat purchase.
- Recovering abandoned carts through direct messages once the shopper is back at their computer.
- Offering alternatives when the main product is out of stock: what is available with similar specs.
- Cross-selling related items: a case, consumables, a second size as a gift.
- Handling messages on listing platforms where shoppers write before placing an order.
- Taking enquiries outside working hours: the shopper leaves a question, the bot clarifies the details and passes it to a manager in the morning.
The main rule
The bot never invents prices or stock levels. It reads the data from your accounting system, so every answer matches the real warehouse balance. That is a fundamental difference from a scripted bot with prices hard-coded inside it.
How to measure the effect
Do not count replies; track three numbers: the share of requests closed without an operator, the share of requests that end in an order, and the cost per lead. It is also worth watching repeat purchases among the people who chatted with the bot.
- Compare the share of leads lost to a missing answer before and after implementation.
- Count revenue from requests the bot carried through to an order, not the total number of conversations.
- Track the return rate: size advice and product alternatives should bring it down.
- Compare the volume of manual work for operators before and after: that is the main signal that the process is automated.
The order of implementation
- Export a month of conversations and group the questions by topic.
- Pick the topics that can be closed without an operator: that is 60–80% of requests in most stores.
- Fill the knowledge base: prices, stock levels, delivery and return rules, size charts.
- Connect the channel with the most requests and run a two-week pilot.
- Check the answer quality, fix the wording, and only then connect the remaining channels.
Common questions
Will the bot mess up prices or stock levels
Not if the bot is connected to your accounting system or website. Answers are built on live data, not on text a developer typed by hand. Once a month, still compare the wording with your commercial terms.
How many orders will the bot bring
There is no direct answer, because the result depends on the range, the traffic and the quality of the answers. Experience shows that if you were losing requests outside working hours, the effect is visible in the first weeks. We calculate exact figures during the consultation, using your own statistics.
The most expensive item in an online store is the one that is unavailable at the moment the customer wants it. A chatbot gives shoppers that availability back, and with it, the sales.
Where to start
Start with a quick audit of your conversations: look at what percentage of messages got no answer, and about which products. That sample almost always shows where automation will bring the first money. On a free consultation we go through such a sample with you.
